Beautiful Lawns

By John Bentley

Beautiful lawns are so inviting and just great to look at and walk barefoot on. Most people like to keep their lawns looking nice, some even have a little competitive spirit and want their lawn to look more beautiful than the neighbors. Regardless creating that beautiful lawn takes hard work. First one must make sure that the soil the lawn is growing in is healthy. This can be done by a simple soil test where you take some probes of your soil, which is a sample of what is under the grass, to the local extension service and they can tell you the condition of your soil and what it needs to grow healthy grass. Next you should decide if you want to improve your soil chemically or organically. Many times people with small children and or pets may choose to move more toward the organic side, this way there is less to worry about as far as the child or pet getting any chemicals in their system. The organic approach to lawn care is also good for the earth and helps reduce run off and stop chemicals from going into the local streams.
The process of lawn beautification may also require aeration and topdressing. This process, especially when topdressing with compost, is to create air pockets in the soil and add organic matter. By doing this it allows the roots to penetrate the soil more and allows for better permeability of rain water into the soil where the organic matter can help store it to reduce drying out of the soil and browning out of the grass. The compost also helps make nutrients in the soil more available to the plants and adds some fertilizer value to the soil for plant uptake.
In order to see great results it make take three to four applications with the topdressing and more aeration over a period of three years.
A beautiful lawn naturally done is hard to beat.
