Healthy Soils Need Good Pore Space
Healthy soils need adequate pore space for good water percolation. If you want to grow a nice green lawn you must consider the needs of the soil. If we look at soils like clay one could say they have more pore spaces than other soils which would be correct. The only problem is the pore spaces are tight and do not allow water to infiltrate the soil very easily. On the other hand some sandy soils would have better water infiltration ability but would not be able to retain much of the water needed for growing good grass. Everything in balance. By adding compost and or medium coarse sand to a clay soil in conjunction with aeration one would help increase the percolation ability of the soil and it would retain water which is great when we get dry years. On sandy soils adding compost would help the soil to retain water and again reduce the risk of the grass drying out so fast in dry years. Water is an important resource and we will have to be more careful when using it for irrigation in the future. Helping clay soils retain more water through improved percolation will also reduce run off. Topdressing with Earth friendly materials can help reduce water consumption and improve our soils. |
