Saving the Planet By John Bentley of Earth & Turf Products LLC Developing niche equipment for the turf industry has been very rewarding for many reasons. The main focus of our company is to create machines that spread environmentally friendly products onto our lawns and commercial turf areas. Our believe has been by creating healthier more permeable soils we can help reduce storm water run off, create soils that are more drought resistant and reduce the need for some of the toxic chemicals that are currently being used on our turf. We see this as doing our part to "Save the Planet". The process has been one of my more difficult ventures mainly because the adoption rate for an organic approach to lawn care has been slow. This seems a little crazy as one would think that people would want to use organics versus chemical especially if they have small children and pets that could be exposed to the variety of chemicals being sprayed onto the grass at home, on our playgrounds and sports fields. Like I said, it is not easy but I can honestly say that over the last ten years progress has been made. I can remember going to trade shows back in 2000 and having people come up to me and say what does that machine do? It was like I was the educating the masses on the value of topdressing compost and other environmentally safe products on their lawns and sports fields. It was a 2004 when finally people would actually come to our booth and say, "I need to get into this business". I believe this was due to a number of factors such as the push on organic foods, some dry weather that caused lawns to brown out and a constant push on the education side. Now regulations are coming in, starting in Canada and moving south that will also help and more people are getting it. We all want a healthy planet, clean water and our children and pets to be safe on our lawns and green play areas. John Bentley has been involved in the Commercial Turf, Construction and Agricultural equipment business for over forty years. He specializes in new product development and launching products into the market. Products John has developed have been sold on a world wide basis.
